The NBC procedural, McMillan and Wife, part of the NBC Mystery Movie series, presents a somewhat unusual take on the cop show formula, focusing on the domestic and professional life of San Francisco Police Commissioner Stewart McMillan (Rock Hudson) and his younger, socialite wife, Sally McMillan (Susan Saint James). Each week, the pair find themselves wrapped up in a murder mystery, often by accident. Stewart, a straight-laced and intelligent officer, juggles high-profile cases with his home life, while Sally, initially portrayed as a somewhat scatter-brained and impetuous character, develops into a capable amateur sleuth. The series also features their loyal housekeeper, Mildred (Nancy Walker), whose wit and wisdom add a comedic element to the proceedings. The series frequently uses San Francisco locations, adding to its charm.
McMillan and Wife, while seemingly a light-hearted take on the police procedural, often veers into the absurd, with cases that can be convoluted and solutions that sometimes require a large suspension of disbelief. The chemistry between Hudson and Saint James is palpable, their on-screen relationship a constant push and pull between Stewart’s professional demeanor and Sally’s more adventurous spirit. Walker, as Mildred, is a scene-stealer, her deadpan delivery a perfect foil to the couple’s antics.
Yet, the show, at times, feels like it can’t quite decide what it wants to be. Is it a serious police drama, a romantic comedy, or a lighthearted mystery? The constant shift in tone can be jarring, undercutting some of its potential to truly break through the standard formula. The writing is uneven; some episodes are sharp, others rely on tired tropes. Still, the show has an undeniable charm, due in large part to the leads. Saint James in particular elevates the material, taking what could be a caricature and making it something engaging.
